The Albion
10 Thornhill Road
Islington London N1 1HW
Review Notes:
- Quaint Georgian Country (gastro)pub in the Islington borderlands. Shabby chic style, with bare tables and mix matched chairs. Back dining rooms with bare brick painted walls, the historic nature of the building was largely on show.
- Ambience was busy, local and a little rustic. The pub seems to be put over almost entirely to dining. On a Sunday for lunch they were very busy, our slot was only one hour due to some scheduling issues within our group. Booking essential.
- The group was a full house this time around, so catered for a wide variety of tastes.
- Consensus on roast beef was good, a nice slab with an amount of marbling. Medium cooked, good flavours. Roast Chicken and pork belly was also sampled. No complaints on the quality. Noted Yorkshire puddings were only served as standard with the beef. Fish and chips also sampled, remarked as good.
- Limited selection of sides. Yorkshire puddings were a good size, although slightly “bready”, not as light as others experienced. Ubiquitous carrots, good but nothing to mark them out, and shredded cabbage, uninspiring.
- Gravy was plentiful, additional requested but still plenty of left over. Good taste, but again nothing to mark it outstanding.
- Guinness was served, appeared to be a limited number of real ales. Only Meantime sampled. Although a member of the group tried a Virgin Mary as an aperitif, remarks of a good flavour although a pre-mix so not entirely customised to his taste.
- No chance to try pudding, as our time slot had expired.
- Price £18.50 for the roast beef.
- Honourable mention: Desserts were later procured at The Duchess pub. Marked for future lunch visit.
